During a joint expedition of specialists from the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society, it was confirmed that the sunken object found in the Barents Sea was a Soviet submarine, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The logistics support vessel Elbrus was able to study the seabed. It is believed that a Soviet Katyusha-class submarine sank in a collision with the German Bantos-A minefield. It was possible to find the submarine during an expedition to search for two other submarines, which have not yet been found.

Initial reports of the object came from fishermen, who complained that their nets were running into something in the sea. It turned out that the submarine split into three parts, and the whole thing is shrouded in fishing nets. Research is ongoing, the goal is to establish the tactical number of the deceased ship.
