Sending peacekeepers to the zone of the Karabakh conflict is possible only with the consent of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said on October 3.

“Peacekeepers can enter only with the consent of the two parties,” a Kremlin spokesman told RBC.

Earlier on Saturday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that the introduction of peacekeepers in Karabakh can only be discussed at the level of the OSCE Minsk Group (RF, USA, France) on settlement. He pointed out that Moscow is a co-chairing country, and the Minsk Group is doing everything to establish peace in the region.

On September 27, clashes between the forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan began in the region of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The parties blamed each other for the start of the shelling.

Russia, France, the United States and the UN called on the parties to a ceasefire and a peaceful settlement.

Yerevan and Baku have disputed the ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh since the decision of the autonomy to leave the Azerbaijan SSR in 1988. Most of the region’s population is Armenians, however, according to Azerbaijan’s position, this territory is part of the country. During the armed confrontation from 1992 to 1994, Baku lost control of the region.
